Non-Monotonic Relationships between Return Periods of Precipitation Surface Hazard Intensity

چکیده

Hazardous surface processes such as floods and mass movements are often induced by a common trigger extreme precipitation. The relationship between the intensity of hazard is generally assumed to be monotonically increasing (increasing precipitation never decreases intensity). validity this assumption complex multi-hazard events has not been thoroughly investigated. In research, cumulative was investigated simulation 50 return period on Carribean island Dominica. Here, several tropical hurricanes have with (flash) floods, slope failure, debris flows landslides within past decades. Results show that interactions break for intensity. particular, landslide dam formation movement dilution result in intensities one-to-one function Spatial variability behavior quantified using rank-order correlation coefficient period. Since periods are, study case, approximately equal, specific location can classified based This implications risk calculation decision making related disaster reduction.

A model for non-monotonic intensity coding

Peripheral neurons of most sensory systems increase their response with increasing stimulus intensity. Behavioural responses, however, can be specific to some intermediate intensity level whose particular value might be innate or associatively learned. Learning such a preference requires an adjustable trans- formation from a monotonic stimulus representation at the sensory periphery to a non-mo...

On the variability of return periods of European winter precipitation extremes over the last three centuries

We investigate the changes of extreme European winter (December-February) precipitation back to 1700 and show for various European regions that return periods of extremely wet and dry winters are subject to significant changes both before and after the onset of anthropogenic influences. Generally, winter precipitation has become more extreme. We also examine the spatial pattern of the changes o...
